Loft insulation removal · Looe

Loft Insulation Removal in Looe

Old, damp or contaminated loft insulation removed from properties across Looe and south-east Cornwall — bagged on site, disposed of correctly, and the loft left ready for new insulation.

Why old loft insulation needs removing

Insulation only works while it is trapping air. Once the material compacts, soaks up moisture or is disturbed by pests, it stops doing its job — and in some cases starts causing problems of its own. In Looe and the surrounding coastal villages, roof spaces see a lot of moisture, and older properties along the harbour and up through West Looe and East Looe are particularly prone to damp, settled or contaminated insulation.

If you are having new insulation fitted, the old material has to come out first. If you have found damp patches, pest damage, or you simply do not know what is up there, call us on 01503 807574 and we will take a look.

Damp and condensation

Damp insulation loses its thermal performance entirely. In bad cases it holds water against timbers and encourages rot. Wet material needs to be removed before anything new goes in.

Compaction and settling

Loose-fill and mineral wool settles over time. A loft insulated twenty years ago may now be sitting at half the original depth, which means it is no longer meeting modern standards — and compressed insulation is far less effective than the same material at full depth.

Pest contamination

Mice, rats and squirrels nest in loft insulation. Once material has been contaminated with droppings, urine or nesting debris it should be removed rather than left in place, and any new insulation should only go in after the access point has been dealt with.

Asbestos concerns

Some older lofts — particularly in period properties around Looe — contain asbestos-containing materials, often around pipework or flue surrounds. We do not remove asbestos. If you think asbestos may be present, tell us before the job so the appropriate arrangements can be made.

Types of insulation we remove

  • Fibreglass (glass wool) — the most common material in UK lofts, usually in rolls or batts.
  • Mineral wool — denser than fibreglass, often used in newer installations.
  • Loose-fill insulation — blown-in material such as cellulose or mineral granules, which settles and shifts over time.
  • Older quilted or sheet insulation — products that have been in place for decades and no longer meet current standards.
  • Contaminated insulation — material affected by damp, pests or general debris.

If you are not sure what is in your loft, tell us when you call and we can advise.

How the process works

Tell us about the loft and what you have found up there. We agree a fixed price before any work starts. On the day we arrive with the right equipment, protect the access route, remove the old insulation into sealed bags, take it away and dispose of it correctly, then sweep the loft area so it is ready for new insulation to be fitted.

Most domestic lofts are cleared within a day. Larger or heavily contaminated lofts may take longer — we confirm the timescale with your quote.

Access and equipment

Looe's housing stock includes a lot of older terraces, harbour-side cottages and post-war properties, and roof spaces vary enormously from one to the next. Common issues we work around include small or awkward loft hatches, low headroom, boarded lofts with limited access underneath, and lofts with no fixed ladder or lighting. None of these are a problem — we bring the right equipment to work safely and to keep the rest of the property clean.

Disposal

Loft insulation cannot go out with normal household waste. It is bulky, it can be contaminated, and it needs to be disposed of through a licensed route. All material removed from your loft is bagged on site, taken away and disposed of correctly. If you want to know where your material ends up, ask when you book — we are happy to explain.
